Why Walking Is One of the Most Underrated Forms of Exercise

Why Walking Is One of the Most Underrated Forms of Exercise

The Daily Habit Every Woman Should Add to Her Routine

If I could convince every woman to add one daily habit to improve her health, mood, and fitness, it would be this:

Walk.

It sounds almost too simple.

People think they need the hardest workout.
The most complicated program.
The latest fitness trend.

The truth is, one of the most powerful things you can do for your body costs nothing.

Just start walking.

Walking Isn’t “Just” Walking

A lot of people don’t give walking the credit it deserves.

They think if they’re not dripping in sweat or completely exhausted, it doesn’t count as exercise.

I couldn’t disagree more.

If you’re walking at a good pace and getting your heart rate up, it absolutely counts.

In fact, I encourage my clients to make it even more challenging by:

Choosing routes with hills
Walking on an incline if using a treadmill
Maintaining a brisk pace
Adding a weighted vest once they’ve built a solid walking habit

You don’t need to make it complicated.

You just need to stop being lazy about it.

Choose the route with the hills.
Walk with purpose.

Your Body Loves Walking

One of the reasons I recommend walking so often is because it’s much easier on your joints than running.

For many women, especially those who are beginners or carrying extra weight, walking is a sustainable way to improve cardiovascular fitness without putting unnecessary stress on the body.

If your goal is a lean, athletic, curvy physique, I also prefer walking or sprinting over long-distance running.

Walking allows you to stay active while recovering well enough to continue strength training, which is where most women build the shape they’re looking for.

The Benefits Go Far Beyond Fat Loss

Walking isn’t just about burning calories.

Some of the biggest benefits happen outside of weight loss.

I’ve seen clients experience:

Better moods, especially when walking outside in the sunshine
Less stress
Better sleep
Improved recovery
More energy throughout the day
Better lymphatic circulation
Improved consistency with their fitness routine

Many women underestimate how much better they feel after adding a daily walk.

Then they start doing it consistently.

They feel better.
They start looking better.
And suddenly, they’re believers.

Walking Is for Everyone

People often ask me who should be walking.

My answer is simple.

Everyone.

Whether you’re just beginning your fitness journey or you’ve been training for years, walking belongs in your routine.

It’s one of the easiest habits to maintain throughout every stage of life.

It supports your health without beating your body up.

Walking Works Best with Strength Training

If I were building the perfect routine for most women, it would include both strength training and walking.

Strength training builds muscle, supports bone health, and gives your body shape.

Walking improves cardiovascular health, recovery, endurance, and daily movement.

Together, they’re one of the best combinations for long-term health and fitness.

You don’t have to choose one or the other.

Do both.

Thirty Minutes Is Enough

One of the biggest excuses I hear is:

“I don’t have enough time.”

You don’t need hours.

My recommendation is simple.

Aim for at least 30 minutes.

That’s enough time to get your body moving, elevate your heart rate, clear your mind, and invest in your health.

If you only have 30 minutes available today, I’d much rather see you go for a quality walk than do nothing at all.

Doing nothing never moves you closer to your goals.

Every step counts.

Stop Overthinking It

So many people wait until everything is perfect.

They wait for Monday.
They wait until they have better shoes.
They wait until they lose weight.
They wait until they’re more motivated.

Meanwhile, they could have gone on hundreds of walks.

Stop overthinking it.

Just start.

Take the first walk.

Then take another tomorrow.

Those small decisions add up over weeks, months, and years.

A Final Thought

If there’s one habit I hope every woman builds, it’s walking.

It’s simple.
It’s free.
It’s accessible.
It’s sustainable.

And it has the power to improve your physical health, mental health, energy, recovery, and overall quality of life.

Don’t underestimate something simply because it’s simple.

The habits that change your life usually are.

So lace up your shoes.

Find a route with some hills.
Walk at a brisk pace.
If you’re ready for more, throw on a weighted vest or find an incline.

But above all else, just start.

Your future self will be glad you did.
